Occasionally, this can be a fun challenge, but it can also be a bore. One of the most enjoyable parts of Crackdown 3 involves ascending devilish towers, heavily fortified. It’s compact, with many skyscrapers, and an emphasis on convoluted verticality. I can drive from one end to the other in a few minutes. The city is also tiny, especially in comparison to the big, open worlds we’ve seen in the past year. The buildings are facades, with little to no internal access. This location sameyness makes the world feel empty and dull, as if it were a simple toy model rather than a real place. It’s a strangely untextured metropolis, as if it were made from plastic, and this diminishes its charm and variety.ĭespite the differing functions and affluence of its neighborhoods, there’s little sense of geographic personality. The city is a neon collection of standard video game districts, including a shantytown, an industrial complex, and an entertainment hub populated by smug Silicon Valley types. A target lock-on system alerts players to danger, demanding quick movement through or past buildings in order to put on a block for defenders, or maintain aim for attackers. The maps are chaotic and vertical simulacrums of the city, which work well as multiplayer shooting arenas. I generally opt for a mixture of all three.Ĭrackdown 3’s multiplayer arenas make far more use of environmental destructibility than the campaign, with plenty of blowing holes through walls to get at enemies, or to escape their pursuits.
